Dice (die) A die (plural dice) is a plastic or ivory shape with numbers on facets that are mathematically distruuted and equal to provide a random number based on the number of sides. There are seven usuall dice that D&D uses (thus calling it D20 system). 1d4, 1d6, 1d8, 1d10, 1d12, 1d20, and a percentile (1d%, has the same numbers as 1d10 only multiplied by 10, used for the second digit of 1d100). There are also less common dice such as 1d30, and 1d100 (actually has 100 sides), and I have heard rumors of 1d1000. There are also numbers that are not real dice: 1d2, 1d3, and more rarely 1d5. These are found by taking 1d4, 1d6, and 1d10 and dividing the result by 2. In the event that more than 1 die is rolled, that number is accompanied before the Dx such as 2d6 or 10d8.
Roll: To roll the die or dice, record or report the outcome. The "natural" roll is the number that lands face up on the die. The "Not-Natural" roll is the total of the palyer's roll and their applicable modifiers.
Reroll: To roll the dice again, whether by GM enforcement, special ability, or by cheating.
Test: The general term for rolling dice to determine an outcome. Checks and Saves are both examples of these from D&D. Some systems, Such as Shadowrun 3rd Ed and Heavy Gear Silhouette roll more than one die for a test, to determine action. The most common multiple roll die for Tests is by far the D6. Tests are determined to have succeeded if the die broke a target number, with or without the modifiers. Shadowrun tallies the number of successful rolls of a test THEN applies a modifier against a second margin.
Check: An active test where the character initiates an action that he or she may fail at. Checks are used to determine whether a character can do a particular action.
Save: A passive test used to determine whether a character can react fast or well enough to prevent some harm to come to him or her.
DC Difficulty Classes are the target numbers that must be achieved to qualify as a success. Some DCs must be beaten, some rolled at or over. DCs determine how hard (and thus how much of a modifier, or how many dice must be rolled) a given action is.
Taking 20: To take 20 is a D&D term that involves spending ten times as much time to complete. The benefit is that the character simply adds 20 to their modifier, such as a skill, to "roll" the check.
Cockeye (Cockdie): A die that lands on an edge or falls off of some surface. Generally this is used when a die is suspended so that no facet is facing directly up.
