In the land of Murphy: Because it follows Murphy's law.
There lived a Daemon, not like Daemons we are used to, yet not unlike them either.
We shall call him D.Mon, for all intents and purposes and I think it will be fair to imagine him speaking with a jamacian accent. The reason why shall be explained in detail presently...
Before this D.Mon was created, there were a number of daemons created by the selection of Gods that rule over the known universe. As a matter of fact, the Pantheon of Gods and God like Beings, decided to CREATE other things in general. Why did they do this? Well, since there is no proof that they were entertained by our existance or that they had to prove anything by our existing, and considering their passiveness towards us now, in order to CREATE, they had to invent a philosophy.
This Philosophy was Entitled: Because I Can. Not because they should, or because it would heighten their existance... No, they created merely because it was in their power to do so. Another aspect of this philosophy is Why Not?
Personally, I find them both annoying. To no end.
So after they created, possibly several times in order to get things right, they wanted to invent their Opposites and see if they would like them.
They created Devils, which by comparing their relative powers and alignments, are the opposite of Gods.
The Gods, probably being unimpressed with their creation and being vain enough to think themselves worthy of a more powerful nemisis(well, they were worthy enough, but the fact still remains that they were vain), took several of the Devils and gave them a different alignment. Lawful Evil. Once the Devils had enough control over their powers and weren't complete victims to the whims of Chaos, they became more powerful and concentrated. Thus, Daemons were born.
After a few millenia of fighting the Gods and corrupting Mortals, the other creations of the Gods, some of Daemons were lifted into God Status, and others were trying their best to banish them and the rest of the Pantheon into oblivion, leaving the mortals defenseless.
Still others were inventing their own games to contend the next few millenia with, and others fading out of existance because nobody believed in them anymore.
Yet there was one Daemon who was unlike any other.
D.Mon had just killed one of the lesser Gods and was now given a God-like status.
D.Mon was at a loss. Now with his God-like status, he wasn't a God, and yet he wasn't a Daemon. He traversed across the heavens to see what he could do about this unexpected lessening of power.
The entire Pantheon did not understand why he wasn't given full God status, despite having killed one of their own, no matter how much of a lesser God that being was.
After hearing analogy and legend and story after fable and myth and tale, he grew weary of the Pantheon, and was overcome with his previous desire to desecrate and destroy all that the Gods held dear.
However, now being God-like, he didn't have to just resort to lawful-evil ways... and what better way to fight the Gods than to be unlawful... Perhaps not chaotic, for that would mean a complete reduction in power to that of a Devil, which was clearly not what he wanted.
No, he would be completely neutral, only doing things for his own gain. No matter what they might be...and if anybody questioned it, they would have this answer:
He was God-like, and had enough God-like powers to adopt a new philosophy:
Because I Can.
